How should a teacher instruct a class of diverse students given what we now know and understand about adolescent development, brain research, learning styles, multiple intelligences, motivation, socio-economic, demographic, language and cultural differences? In Addition, there is a mountain of district, state, and federal government regulations, mandates, testing requirements, policies and rules to be implemented for compliance.
Classroom Management consists of the principles the teacher uses to instruct, discipline and control the learning environment. It encompasses teaching styles, learning styles, physical room configuration, student work, expectations, rules, and procedures. The purpose of school is to provide an environment where students can learn while feeling safe and valued.
Classroom management provides the guide, structure and framework for establishing procedures, routines, and behavior expectations to create a learning environment that engages students, achieves instructional goals, and meets the diverse needs of students. The philosophy is driven by three concepts: The role of the student, the role of the teacher, and belief in what a classroom and instruction should look like.
I believe all students can learn, but all students don’t learn in the same way or at the same rate. The goal of teaching is not to make every student the same or equal but to give every student an equitable chance to learn.
While every student may have a right to an education, no students has the right to be defiant or disrespectful to a teacher, administrator, or fellow student. The behavior and actions of one cannot interfere with the learning of another. Behavior that creates an unsafe situation for the student and those around him cannot be tolerated. This includes threats or intimidation that are physical, verbally, or emotionally. Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power. Most often, it is repeated over time.
Keeping students on task, preventing disruptions, maintaining order, using time wisely, increase teaching time, increase student learning, and maintain sanity and order are critical elements of the classroom.
Education is a partnership with the families. Parents have given schools (Teachers) a huge responsibility for teaching, caring and disciplining a child. Every student has value and is to be respected as the unique person who God created them to be. Communication with parents is a critical component
My “Welcome Letter”, Student Pledge, Expectation Form, Intervention Form, school handbook, rules, procedures, and posted discipline plan, identifies model behaviors that exemplify good student learner characteristics that will enable all students to be more successful.
